Skelpit
Lug
Based in Central Scotland, the
Skelpit Lug Ceilidh Band
has been
around for fifteen years, during which time it has built up a
performance expertise which few bands can match.
With a top-class front line of fiddle, accordion and mandolin,
supported by double bass, guitars and bodhran, the band offers a
rich variety of sounds from gentle waltzes to rollicking reels and
jigs. Add in some wonderful singing and a lot of excellent calling
in several languages, and you have a band for all occasions.
"It's difficult to provide a set list, if you mean a list of tunes
or dances which we'll perform during an event. During a typical 3-4
hours ceilidh or wedding reception we'll play over 100 tunes - it's
usually four tunes per dance, whether it's marches, reels, jigs,
waltzes, strathspeys etc. In addition, we never arrive with a
pre-determined list of dances. We sometimes begin with a Gay
Gordons and then a Dashing White Sargeant, but after that we read
the 'mood' and the age of the crowd and adapt / evolve accordingly.
Is the crowd younger or older ? Are they experienced at Scottish
dances or not ? Are there a lot of overseas visitors who need to
be helped along in a foreign language ? Have there been any
specific dance requests ? Is it a small crowd, so people get
tired and need a song or a tune for a rest ? etc etc. These
factors very much influence which dances we decide to play, whether
it's well-known standards or new-but-fun alternatives. All we know
is that we usually get it spot-on right !"
Though performing mostly in lowland Scotland, the Lugs have played
widely across Scotland and England and abroad.

appear, they have always been highly praised for their musical
skills, interesting dances and the tremendous atmosphere which
they invariably create.
